John McCain is Impulsive

Filed under: Uncategorized — ononehand @ 8:52 pm

If John McCain picked someone he met just once to be his vice president, how long would he think about starting a war in, say, Iran?

Can we just have a president who knows how to think before he makes a decision? Being president is a serious job OK.

Can Barack Obama pleeease make a commercial asking this question?

This VP pick has really incensed me. John McCain seems more like George W. Bush to me than he ever has before.

Since John McCain’s immediate answer to every foreign policy crisis of the last two decades was to send in American ground troops, I doubt he would think very long before starting a war in Iran.

But I don’t think you mean to say that Palin was picked off the cuff without serious scrutiny and strategizing. McCain’s strategy in that may be wrong, but I think quite a lot of thought went into it.

    • I tend to think most politicians do things on the basis of strategy, but I don’t think he consulted many people before he did this. John McCain is already known as impulsive and I agree that he’s impulsive, and this seems to be an impulsive choice.

For all I know she was the smartest choice among all potential candidates – I know Mitt Romney would have hurt his chances, or any other conservative would have hurt his chances. I can see that. But can anyone deny this is a Bushlike move? Starting the war in Iraq probably took some strategizing, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t ultimately a bad, bad impulse that led to that choice.

      • You don’t know me, but very rarely do I find someone who shares the same political views as I do.

All McCain is going for, is more of the same.. Maybe he just picked Palin to make his campaign seem more diverse than it actually is.. more interesting, to draw more attention to himself.
That’s all a 71-year old man that’s running for president needs.
A female vice president with a pregnant 17-year old daughter.
And the fact that he’s 71.

      • Impulsive

By all major media accounts (Fox News anchors and guests, CNN and MSNBC) you’re entirely right for saying this was impulsive – done on a whim. The meetings between McCain and Palin were incredibly short and the vetting was limited.

But, the way in which McCain is impulsive does not strike me as Bush-like. The decision to invade Iraq was made by Bush and his advisors after much long and careful thinking – Cheney was a veteran foreign policy hawk who had thought about Iraq long before 2003. This is what is so ultimately eggregious about that decision. It wasn’t done on impulse; it was done with the thorough, terribly flawed thinking.
