Meteor

Filed under: Uncategorized — ononehand @ 9:18 pm

Tonight I’ve seen three bright green shooting stars, spaced about an hour apart, each lasting at least seven seconds. One of them (the first one that fell) split into a couple pieces and lasted the longest of the three – I was with a group of people and we all had time to look up and watch it travel. It looked more like a fast-moving airplane at first until the long tail formed and the color took on a bluish tint, then broke into a few small pieces moving together with the same tail. It appeared to cool to a dim ember that continued moving at the same speed, presumably to the ground. The third one also seemed to have made it all the way to the ground.

I’m trying to scan the news to see what happened. Did a satellite break up and is sending chunks down with each orbit, or are we just in the middle of a regular meteor shower that is exceptionally notable this year?

Has anyone else seen anything?

Update: 9news.com is reporting that several people saw a meteor at 7:30pm. That must have been the first and brightest.

  1. I saw one last night too and thought it was very odd. I first though it was a plane or something as well until the tail grew but it was freaking bright and honestly seemed kinda slow for a meteorite.

  2. That’s strange, because I did see one about 9:55 CST on my way in from my route. Rather bright, which caught my eye, and it was traveling south to north (approx) for maybe five seconds. Viewed in the Chicago NW suburbs.

  3. The Orionids look like they may be it…though who knows. Meteors are fairly common.
