Obama: The Administration of Names

Filed under: Uncategorized — ononehand @ 4:12 pm

In his first act since becoming president-elect, Barack Obama offered Congressman Rahm Emanuel the job of White House Chief of Staff in his administration. Aside from being an energetic and sharp ally whose staunchly progressive message avoids ringing leftist or divisive – in many ways reflecting Obama’s own attitude and demeanor – the congressman also has a really fucking awesome name.

George. James. John. Thomas. William.

Bush. Adams. Carter. Taft. Ford.

I won’t knock a person for his name, but the history of U.S. presidents is not filled with particularly interesting ones. There is a strength that rings in Washington and Roosevelt, but that probably has more to do with the fact that we grow up associating it with a popular, heroic president than the actual sound of the word.

Barack Hussein Obama shatters that as probably the most unlikely-sounding name in a president. Now we have Barack Obama and Rahm Emmanuel (to replace Josh Bolten) working together from the White House. How cool is that.
